75 years of the Nakba
Nakba Day on May 15th, 2023 commemorates 75 years since hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homes upon the declaration of the Israeli state. Any Palestinian will tell you that Nakba Day is not simply the anniversary of an event that took place 75 years ago. Rather, it marks the 75th year of a continued campaign to expunge the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination; and it is a struggle that is relived generation after generation.
These 75 long years have been marred by daily violence, bombings, invasions, expulsions, blockades, displacement, and apartheid. But they are also characterized by remarkable resilience. The Nakba is not only a tragedy forced uponPalestinians. It is a process that Palestinians have survived and resisted every step of the way. The mere fact that Palestinians are still standing steadfast in their homeland, 75 years in, is a testament to their tenacity.
That is why, on Nakba day, we remember what has been lost, honor everyday acts of sumud (steadfastness), and recognize what still must be done. So, join us in matching our mourning with acts of solidarity and support. Together, we can build a brighter future for the next 75 years in Palestine.
