Remembering Mahmoud Darwish
Today marks 10 years since the passing of Mahmoud Darwish, the poetic voice of the Palestinian struggle for freedom. Darwish was an inspiration to Palestinians across the world, his words reverberating across borders, social classes, religions, and political opinions, captivating minds both young and old.
As Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, and across the Middle East face ever-growing challenges to freedom and self-determination, his work remains as important and relevant as ever. At UPA, we have always found inspiration and strength in so many of Darwish’s words. Throughout the years, we have embraced several of Darwish’s phrases as they inspired us and represented the work we do.
Now in our 40th year of service, our work is perhaps best embodied by his quote, “on this land, we have that what makes life worth living.” Since our founding in 1978, we have been dedicated to helping Palestinians build a life worth living, so that they may lead lives free from the shackles of oppression and occupation.
Our 40th Anniversary Banquet, A Celebration of Life and Hope, is an extension of this sentiment. In the face of so much oppression, violence, despair, and darkness, Palestinians love living and seek a better life. On this land, we do indeed have something worth living for and something worth thriving for, and that is worth celebrating.
We are cultivating hope, one day at a time, and together, with your support and attendance, we can continue to do so beyond our 40th year, for as long as our work remains necessary. Together we can realize a better future for all Palestinians.
