Resilience wins in Lebanon
Fleeing the prolonged, dreadful war in Syria, Ghada, a Palestinian grandmother, ended up in a Lebanese refugee camp with her son and her three grandchildren. There, fighting poverty and hunger is a daily struggle. Ghada’s perseverance led her to find a job at Social Support Society’s Active Aging House; specifically, at their UPA-funded kitchen, where refugees are employed to cook hot meals for their elderly fellow refugees.
Can you support struggling Palestinian communities by donating to UPA today?
With her income from this job, Ghada can provide for herself, her son, and his children. She was even able to send some of her savings to her daughters in Syria. “I feel like a winner,” Ghada said. “I have found my place, and I feel my value.”
Today, the kitchen has twenty employees and is self-sustaining. UPA places great importance on funding such projects because they have an enormous impact. They provide economic independence and strengthen the sense of community as they provide meaningful opportunities for refugees rather than relying on charitable handouts.
Ghada’s selflessness and iron-clad commitment to her family is something we frequently see in refugees. While refugee camps are often the most destitute of places, the people there are rich in heart.
Your tax-deductible gift, Sadaqa or Zakat can make a difference.
As May 15th – the commemoration of the Nakba approaches, we remember people like Ghada through their on-going catastrophe. While many Palestinian refugees have faced consecutive wars and tragedies, and while there is much to mourn, there also exists strength and resilience among these communities.
Please donate generously to UPA today; many Palestinians depend on YOU.
With gratitude,
